MESSAGE FROM KARIN On 7th July in Paris the international aid transparency standard will be agreed and I hope to be able to report positively from that meeting. We hope that donors will take advantage of this huge opportunity to deliver on the promise of aid transparency and aid effectiveness commitments having been inspired by recent reports and announcements, though some comments from donors suggest that our concerns may not be addressed.
The UK has announced a ‘UKaid
Transparency Guarantee’ outlining an agenda for disclosing all
information on aid funding by the Department for
International Development.
Meanwhile, EU donors not yet signed up to the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) have been urged to do so in the wake of disappointing transparency results in the 2010 EU AidWatch Report. Over the pond, the U.S.
National Security Strategy has stated the need to improve their
transparency both at home and abroad, and the Canadian Council for
International Development has urged Canada to join IATI in their
report ‘Time to
Act’.
Both the UN
Development Cooperation Forum (DCF) High-level Symposium paper
and ONE’s Data Report
2010 refer to the
work of Publish What You Fund, and Oxfam America’s briefing
paper ‘21st Century
Aid’ and report
‘Information:
Let countries know what donors are doing’ set out the necessity
of accessible, comprehensive, timely and comparable
information on aid.
