UNOPS publishes geocoded information under IATI

By Katie Welford | May 14, 2012 | News

Publish What You Fund welcomes the United Nations Office for Project Services’ (UNOPS) decision to publish fully geocoded information about its activities in the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) format.

By releasing this information, in a comparable format, over 1,000 projects will be available to all stakeholders looking for geographical and technical information about UNOPS’ activities. This information will also be useful to compare it against other donors’ activities and will be searchable by sector, donor, activity time, etc.

This comprehensive data in real time is what makes country level aid information useful to recipients and those involved in planning domestic activities. With more donors like UNOPS publishing to the IATI format and geocoding its aid activities, users of this information will begin to see a more complete and accurate picture of the aid sector.

More and better information in the IATI format can result in better planning, less duplication of projects and activities and can reduce waste of resources.

UNOPS joined IATI in September of 2011 and started publishing to the IATI Registry in October 2011. Currently signatories to IATI represent 75% of reported Official Development Finance (ODF). Those currently publishing represent 43% of reported Official Development Finance (ODF).
