‘21st Century Aid: Recognising success and tackling failure’ is a briefing paper released today, 20th May by Oxfam. Setting out what it says on the tin, aid transparency is recognised as central to increasing aid effectiveness.
‘The Coalition: our programme for government’ was released today, 20th May 2010. We welcome the new government’s focus on increasing aid transparency as set out in Chapter 18 (p.22) on International Development, which starts by introducing its priority to ‘ensure much greater transparency and scrutiny of aid spending to deliver value for money for British taxpayers and to maximise the impact of our aid budget’.
The Aid Transparency Movement, an article published by David Sasaki in Global Voices, provides a clear and concise overview of the necessity of aid transparency and how far the movement has come to date. He draws together the organisations and initiatives which have contributed to the global campaign for more and better aid data disclosure, resulting in a useful reference for both the layman and the expert.
ONE’s aid effectiveness day brought together experts from the German government to discuss the future of development assistance. Reporting on the day in ONE’s blog, Carola Bieniek quotes a participant who summed up a current problem in aid: “Everybody understands that building a school helps to fight poverty. They also understand that building a hospital helps to fight poverty. But that information might even be more important is not quite as easy to understand for most.”
Released on May 4th, ‘Aid Quality and Donor Rankings’ is a paper by Knack, Rogers and Eubank from the World Bank. Part of the Policy Research working paper collection, it offers new measures of aid ranking covering 38 bilateral and multilateral donors as well as an analysis of the usefulness of these measures.
