The U.S. government has significantly reduced the backlog of Freedom of Information requests in the last year, but has been slow to act in other areas related to government secrecy, according to a new secrecy report card by International Right to Know Day will be marked in Brussels by a seminar organised by the European Ombudsman and Transparency International on 28th September. The World Bank’s Vice President for South Asia, Isabel Guerrero, yesterday stressed the importance of transparency in Pakistan aid efforts to reassure donors that flood aid will not be subject to corruption. The first report of the UK Public Opinion Monitor, Aid to Developing Countries: Where does the UK Public Stand, shows that around 52% of the British public view UK aid as ineffective. Published on 8th September by The Institute of Development Studies (IDS), the report goes on to reveal that holding this view increased by 15% the likelihood that the respondent would also support cuts to aid spending. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is aiming to increase its transparency after the release of their annual report in June 2010, which showed too much secrecy in the foundation.
