Andrew Mitchell now the UK’s International Development Secretary
As Andrew Mitchell becomes the UK’s International Development Secretary, Liz Ford lays out what we can expect from this government department in the Guardian’s Katine blog. Following the One World Conservatism green paper for International Development which puts great emphasis on increasing aid accountability and reducing corruption, Mitchell states his priority is improving aid effectiveness “through greater transparency, rigorous independent evaluation and an unremitting focus on results”, ensuring “value for money for the British taxpayer”.
In line with the Conservatives’ “progressive vision of a more prosperous, sustainable and secure world”, Mitchell plans to get the Millennium Development Goals back on track, promoting wealth creation through trade as well as aid and tackling conflict resolution and environmental protection.
Publish What You Fund looks forward to the department’s focus on improving aid transparency and hopes to see the UK continue to take a leading role in the International Aid Transparency Initiative.
