Enthusiasm in EU for spending transparency
Transparency International (TI) EU wrote last month of the mounting awareness and support for increased transparency in spending of EU funds. TI wrote in a blog on the 13th July, "Intransparency of EU funds spending is not only bad for democratic governance and public participation and control, but transparency is also crucial for the fight against corruption as the President of the Budget Control Committee, Luigi de Magistris, underlined this morning in the European Parliament."
The US site Recovery.gov has set a precedent and provided a template for spending transparency in other countries and institutions. Where any current reporting on EU Structural Funds is in different formats and currencies, it is clear that the information must now be disclosed in a common, comparable and machine-readable format.
This is very positive step and shows that the way information is disclosed can make a huge difference to the data’s accessibility and usability.
