International Donor Conference agrees transparency essential in rebuilding Haiti
The International Donor Conference saw representatives of NGOs from around the world come together to agree the approach for rebuilding Haiti. With consensus that accountability and transparency is essential, this should begin a process which promises to bring increased coordination and effectiveness to the development effort.
A joint international NGO statement has been formally endorsed by 4 national platforms from North and South America, and by CONCORD in Europe. It states the necessity of ‘Predictable aid, transparent timetables, harmonization of assistance with Haitian government programs […] according to the Paris Declaration and the Accra Agenda for Action.’
Transparency of development information will allow the Haitian government and society to have ownership and awareness of what is being done, which will in turn increase the chance of future success for the country’s institutions, infrastructure and sustained poverty-reduction.
