Cameron tells Government to increase transparency
The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has instructed all Government departments to act on the coalition’s promise of increased transparency in Government data. The Prime Minister’s May 31st letter stated:
“Greater transparency across Government is at the heart of our shared commitment to enable the public to hold politicians and public bodies to account; […] Full information on all DFID international development projects over £500 [is] to be published online from January 2011, including financial information and project documentation.”
Cameron asked departments to “ensure that any data published is made available in an open format so that it can be re-used by third parties [and] includes the underlying data in an open standardised format.” This will allow tech-experts to create easily understood images to represent the facts and figures of government spending.
Publish What You Fund looks forward to the response to this request from the Department for International Development, having recently announced aid transparency as central to their drive for greater aid effectiveness.
