US Aid, Pakistan and Transparency
In a recent article for the Washington Post Christine Fair (Rand Corporation) meets the news that Pakistan is to see an extra $100 billion development aid from the U.S by calling for a ‘well-structured trust fund’ to administer Pakistani aid flows.
The key rationale for doing so is to address the lack of transparency and information availability which currently characterises U.S foreign aid. Aid in Pakistan is often misappropropriated and, says Fair, a sure-fire way of gaining the support of the Pakistani people would be to develop a more transparent (and thereby effective) aid system.
This would also ensure that the US people receive ‘value for their investment’ in Pakistan whereby aid can be tracked and monitored.
