Accreditation

The Aid Transparency Index provides an independent measure of the transparency of the world’s leading aid and development organisations. Produced by Publish What You Fund since 2012, it offers a rigorous assessment and public ranking of aid transparency. It combines expert human review, targeted software checks and data-user insight to assess not only whether information is published, but whether it is usable, meaningful and complete. Through engagement, feedback and publicity, it has influenced many agencies to improve their transparency. It has garnered political and media attention and set a global benchmark for aid transparency.

From 2026 onwards, we are offering the Aid Transparency Index as a paid-for service, allowing a wider range of organisations to demonstrate their leadership and commitment to transparency. Our accreditation and assessment offering includes engagement and feedback, capacity building, and recognition for your transparency performance.

The benefits of accreditation

Participating in the Index offers the opportunity to:

  • Demonstrate your leadership and commitment to transparency
  • Get an independent, credible transparency accreditation
  • Take advantage of expert guidance to improve your transparency
  • Promote your achievement
  • Benefit from peer learning and training
  • Support the future of the Index as a global public resource

Our information pack sets out what’s involved and who is eligible to participate.

Be part of the 2028 Aid Transparency Index

We are now inviting agencies to sign up to participate in the 2028 Aid Transparency Index.

The Index now offers an annual intake cycle, enabling organisations to participate at the point that best reflects their transparency journey. View our information pack for all the details on the 2027 intake, for organisations seeking to participate in the 2028 Aid Transparency Index. Organisations can sign up from November 2026 to access pre-Index benefits throughout 2027.

Regardless of which intake you join, participants benefit from pre- and post-Index engagement, as well as auxiliary benefits such as training and peer learning.

Accredited and non-accredited agencies in the 2026 Aid Transparency Index

To maintain the Index’s role as an independent assessment of the leading aid and development organisations globally, in 2026 we are also including the major bilateral donors assessed in previous Indexes. These agencies opted not to sign up for the full accreditation process, but they will be scored alongside the accredited organisations, using the same assessment method and scoring approach. They will all appear in the Index ranking – though non-accredited agencies will be differentiated on the chart. Further information about how we ensure fairness in the assessment of accredited and non-accredited agencies is given on our FAQs page.

This note from Kate Weaver examines the fairness and robustness of the new approach to accredited and non-accredited agencies in the 2026 Index.
